Last weekend Carl put together a day’s off-road cycling at Dalby Forest. There were Scouts from Tad, Collingham and Shadwell, and a couple of Explorers. Black, red and green routes were attempted, the video showing those on the Green route. At the end nearly everyone tried the down-hill course and jumps. I think we all had a great time - thanks Carl.
Our Scouts were on top of Great Whernside to watch the sun come up on the next 100 years of Scouting. A memorable experience. With increasing life expectancy perhaps one or two of those present might still be alive when the next 100 years starts !.Many of our Cubs attended the District Ceremony at Harewood House. When we have pictures we will post those.
PS. The song, “Ging gang gooly gooly” can be seen on YouTube here. I don’t think you can buy this song in Europe. It’s clearly an adaptaion of the famous campfire song, but I can give no warranty over what the words mean.
The Scout Association is seeking information from Scouts, Explorers and Network members through an on-line questionnaire. You may win a prize !. Guess what ?.
Well two of us got the T-shirt by running 10k, but the rest got them for snipping more than 8,000 timing chips from the runners’ shoes, which was far harder. Here are the Explorers and one soon-to-be Explorer helping at Jane Tomlinson’s “Run For All” 10k road race in Leeds on Sunday. At very short notice we were asked to put together a team to help remove the timing chips from the runners’ shoes at the end of the race. Well done everyone, a great service at a great event.
Now next year, perhaps one or two might like to join John and Bill in the run. (More information about the run on 22/6/08 at http://www.runforall.com/.)
We were asked to consider the environment when travelling to and from Bramham Park, so the Scouts and Cubs either walked or cycled. Here we see the motley crew of cyclists returning from Bramham. We estimate that roughly 300 litres of petrol and diesil were saved as a result.
The Centenary Camp at Bramham Park was a great success despite the cold and wet weather on Sunday and Monday. Here are some of our Scouts and Leaders enjoying themselves at the Closing Ceremony. In case your are wondering about the red and yellow hair, we were representing Spain.
Photographs and information to follow …Â More information about Centenary Camps across the UK can be found here
On Sunday the group attended the Centenary Parade and service in Millenium Square, Leeds. There must have been over 2,000 Scouts present. The Tadcaster contingent were determined to make more noise than anyone else - something, I think, they achieved. Just imagine what a racket would have been created if the whole group had been there !.
St George’s Day Parades will never be the same again after this.
This weekend our HQ has been host to the UK Junior Women’s Ultimate squad who have been practising and trialling at Tadcaster Grammer School. The team will be competing at the European Championships at Southampton this summer - we wish good luck and hope they win !.
What is Ultimate ?. Good question !. Ultimate Frisbee is a team game using a frisbee instead of a ball. More information here at the UK Ultimate Web Site : watch the videos. An interesting aspect of Ultimate is that there is no referee, the players run the game and acknowledge their own fouls and scores. Teams can be mixed. Sounds quite a good for Scouts. With the help of one the leaders running the weekend, we shall be organising a taster session one Thursday evening in the summer.
The centenary of Scouting will be celebrated throughout the World with the release of special sets of stamps. Among the first to be released are this set from the Isle of Man Post Office (yes, they have their own). The Royal Mail will issue it’s own set of stamps the day before the opening of the Centenary Jamboree in July. If you are interested in collecting stamps related to Scouting there are several dedicated web sites - for example SOSSI .
Every 2 months all Leaders receive a copy of Scouting Magazine through the post. It’s online so you can read it too !. Follow this link for the current April/May edition. Scouting is keen to extend it’s enthusiam to a wider range of kids and so there’s an interesting article on a new section - for 4 to 6 year olds. Guess what the new section will be called - MICE.
